FAQ

What is a Jam

What is a conserve or a preserve?

A conserve and a preserve are functionally the same, a fruit preserve made with a higher proportion of whole or large pieces of fruit than typical jam. They have a rich texture and more noticeable fruit content, making them particularly popular for spreading on toast, serving with scones, or pairing with desserts and cheese.

Which spread contains the most fruit?

Fruit content varies by recipe, but conserves are often associated with a high proportion of fruit and larger fruit pieces. The exact fruit percentage depends on the individual product. Our Pineapple Conserve contains 85g of fruit per 100g.

What is "Extra Jam"?

European term, denoting jam that has (with some exceptions) been made with 45g of fruit to every 100g of jam. Do be aware that the declared sugar figure is the sugar content in the finished product, both that added and that from the fruit itself - fruit and sugar percentages do not other than by chance total 100.

What is a Jelly?

Jelly is a term used for jam made from the juice of the fruit. Juice is obtained from the fruit by cooking it and then sieving it through muslin bags, ready to be cooked with sugar before filling hot into glass jars.

Why isn't marmalade called jam?

Marmalade is a distinct type of fruit preserve made from citrus fruits such as oranges, lemons, or grapefruit. Unlike jam, marmalade traditionally includes pieces of citrus peel, which contribute its characteristic flavour and texture. Because of its unique ingredients and method of preparation, it has its own name.

How does the new marmalade legislation affect the Tiptree range?

The new legislation announced in April 2026 requires marmalades to be identified as citrus products by including the citrus fruit in the product name. Tiptree marmalades are already labelled in this way, so the legislation has no practical impact on the range and no changes to our labelling is required.

Is it healthy to eat jam every day?

Jam can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet when eaten in moderation. Because it is made with fruit and sugar, it is best viewed as a sweet spread rather than a significant source of nutrition. Portion size and overall dietary balance are the most important considerations.

Tiptree Products

Do any of your products contain nuts?

Our Tiptree site is a nut-free factory, all products made at Tiptree are nut free, however our Christmas Puddings are now made at our sister site, Cole’s Puddings, which is also based in Essex.

There are no nuts in the recipe, however as Cole's handles nuts for other puddings, they are made in a factory that handles nuts. We also have a range of Nut Butters which do contain nuts.

Our delicious Nut Butters are crafted for us by our friendly experts in Suffolk, meaning that our Tiptree Factory and all the products manufactured there remain entirely nut free.

Why do Tiptree make Nut Butters?

Are Tiptree Christmas Puddings nut free?

Each pudding is hand filled in a 'Tiptree' earthenware basin, covered with a tie-on cloth and cellophane wrapped before being placed in a rigid box ready for steaming or microwave cooking.

All Tiptree Christmas Puddings are made in our Cole's factory which does handle nuts, The recipe is free from Palm Oil.

Do you still sell Loganberry Conserve?

We are sad to confirm that we are no longer able to produce Loganberry Conserve as the crop has become increasingly challenging to grow.

We apologise that we are no longer able to offer this variety and appreciate that it was a favourite to many.

We can recommend our Sweet Tip Raspberry instead.

What is the difference between Sweet Tip and Tiny Tip Raspberry?

Our Sweet Tip Raspberry Conserve uses sieved raspberry fruit. The fruit content of this jam is 52g per 100g of the product, whereas Tiny Tip Raspberry Conserve is produced using whole & broken raspberries. The fruit content of this jam is 57g per 100g of the product. In terms of taste, they are both quite close with a typical raspberry flavour.

Why is there a lion on the Tawny Marmalade label?

Tiptree 'Tawny' is a full flavoured thick cut Seville orange marmalade. This rich, dark marmalade is made to a cherished recipe and is free from artificial colours, flavours and preservatives. The Seville oranges are cooked with sugar and nothing else. The first stage in making the Tiptree 'Tawny' Orange Marmalade is to gently simmer the whole oranges,
this makes the peel really tender. The oranges are then inspected and prepared by hand. The orange pulp is scooped out, the pips are sieved, and the thick peel is cut. The oranges are then cooked with sugar in small batches using traditional, copper-bottomed pans, and left in a pail to cool overnight. The following day the marmalade is cooked for a second time to caramelise the sugar, this gives it a deep colour and its full-bodied flavour.

We feature a lion in the design of our Tawny Marmalade label as the dark caramelised colour is the same colour as a lion's mane.
