In our last blog we said that it looked like Spring was finally here – well, we can honestly say that we’re really enjoying the warm weather here on the Tiptree farm. Our reservoirs are still full after the winter rain, and we’re looking really good for the season ahead.

April truly is one of the months when the farm looks at its best. Not only do we have rows upon rows of cherry trees in full blossom, but the damson orchard is similarly in full flower. And the bluebells in our field add yet another touch of colour.

Also remember last month when we said the rhubarb crop was almost ready to harvest? That moment happened very quickly earlier in the month – all picked in one day! It looked like a good crop too – we have high hopes for this seasons Rhubarb Jam..

We talk a lot about fruit planting and growing in this blog – it is our main focus after all – but we also take great notice of what’s happening with the wildlife around the farm. We work closely with the RSPB on a Turtle Dove conservation project, with part of the farm dedicated to preserving nesting sites for this lovely bird. No sign of any baby chicks yet – we’ll try and get some photos if any appear.

Back to fruit, and specifically our main crop which is strawberries – and we’re pleased to report that the new growing system is coming along splendidly. The strawberry plants went in last month, and we’re already seeing flowers appear.

April really is a beautiful month on the Tiptree farm. We feel privileged to have all this wonderful colour right on our doorstep, and to be part of maintaining it not just for our jam-making business, but also for future generations to enjoy.
